Thailand Islanders

Today's writer:  Klemm
It's been a while since you've heard from us, but don't worry, we're still alive!  We've found ourselves lost in the Island life in Thailand...and here's how it all started...
First, I'll begin by saying that the beginning of our time in Thailand was all based around being on the island of Koh Phangnan (on the east) by Oct 12th for the Full Moon Party, which I'll describe later.  So we first arrived in Phuket (on the west) around 3pm, where at the last minute we decided to book a 4pm flight to Ko Samui (on the east).  It's totally normal to book tickets for a flight that is currently boarding right??!
As we explored Ko Samui, it was easy to see we were going to love the beaches in Thailand!  We also loved the sawngthaew (don't ask me how to say that) which was our new form of transportation.  It is basically a pick up truck with two benches in the bed of the truck and a roof over your head.  The driver picks up anyone along the way and honks the horn at anyone he thinks might want to jump in.  With tourists everywhere, you can put two and two together...*honk*honk* drive 2 seconds *honk*honk*...don't worry we've already been putting together our business plan to bring this back to the States!

A few other initial things to note about Thailand:
-We jumped right in to adjusting our taste buds to spice.  There have definitely been some tears and runny noses, but it's all worth it...yum...we are loving the food!
-Yes, there are still stray dogs everywhere.  One was even nice enough to join us for a drink!

Next up, we headed to Koh Phangan for the madness of the Full Moon Party!  Alright, so the day of the party we had no idea what to expect because we had heard some pretty crazy things about this party.  Obviously, in American party style, you would start drinking early for any big event, right?  Apparently wrong!  At 6:30 we were some of the first people at the beach...sooo maybe that's why no one was collecting the entry fee when we arrived??!
The night went on, thousands of people started to show and there was fire fire everywhere!!  I thought I was going to take our blog to the next level by inserting videos, but apparently you have to pay for that, so sorry, but pictures will have to do...if only they did justice.
If the buckets of mixed drinks, the stall holders yelling to make friends with you so you buy drinks from them, and the bright neon of everyone's clothing didn't keep you entertained, why not go for a nice leisurly FIRE jump rope...don't worry, after seeing a guy's leg hair go up in flames and many people get taken out by the rope we decided it wasn't the best idea...

-Or how about a trip down the big slide...yes we did this one and survived  even though it appears that I'm on fire  :)

-If you needed a break from the craziness, no need to worry, just catch some quick z's in the sleeping area!!

-Just an idea of the madness...

We are proud to say that we survived the party, unfortunately, we did not make it until sunrise like some of the others...but all I have to say to those that made sunrise is...where were you at 6:30??!!  So there...

After recovering from the full moon party we had somehow re-energized just in time for my birthday.  We decided to treat ourselves...hotel on the beach with a swim up bar?  Yes, please!

I couldn't have asked for a better birthday!  We even met a Canadian couple that celebrated with us and surprised me with a cake.  Lucky for me, the cake was too small to fit the real number of candles on it!

The rest of our time on Koh Phangan we decided to check out some of the other beaches.  We moved up to Haad Yao, did some snorkeling at Koh Ma, and checked out the pier at Chaloklum.

We were sad to say goodbye to the perfect weather and beauty of the Gulf of Thailand islands, but it was time to move on to the west where our island hopping would continue :)
